Found an interesting problem in that no USB Devices would be recognised other than the modem. A learned friend of mine fixed this by editing the .rules file I'd made for the modem:
#RUN+="/sbin/rmmod usb_storage"
RUN+="/usr/sbin/usb_modeswitch -d 1 -v 0x19d2 -p 0x2000 -V 0x19d2 -P 0x0001"
The hashed line (original) actually killed all USB apart from the modem and the replacement line, just stops the storage on that modem, and allows everything else to connect properly!

The USB 3G Modem
Now on to the tricky stuff - setting up the 3G USB card. I have a ZTE MF622 modem from three in the UK.
This does not work natively in ubuntu, unlike other modems, but after much trial and error, I managed to get it working - this post is via said modem!
I tried lots of different ways, using the following method:
http://polishlinux.org/linux/ubuntu/three-uk-3g-modem-in-ubuntu-linux/
which is for a different modem, which didn't work, but did give me a few pointers.
I next tried a product developed for the elonex webbook:
https://launchpad.net/wader
This did detect the modem correctly but won't connect for some reason - I'd really like to get this working as it is a nice graphical front end.
The method that did finally work for me is on:
http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-665332.html
So many thanks to jimmy1 - thanks to him, I can now take my nice small notebook away with me instead of my monster 17" Fujitsu Siemens Amilo beast, and see how I get on with linux as opposed to XP!
UPDATE: Still working ok, but i did have to disable my wireless from the Network configuration, otherwise it tried to do use the IP address of my wireless connection as opposed to my 3G Modem

Install
I decided to install Ubuntu 8.04.1 LTS Desktop, and lo and behold it picked up the wifi, sound card etc. Good Start - the one thing that was naff - the graphics - very fuzzy. To solve this I had to use the proprietary drivers from Nvidia, but these installed via ubuntu so no worries there.
the specs
I'm using a Toshiba Satellite M30 - Pentium 4 Mobile 1.6, Geforce FX5200, 1GB RAM, 60gb hard drive
Starting slowly
Well, this is a blog more to remind me what and when i've changed things as I'm a linux newbie, and if I don't write it down somewhere then I'll forget it when I reinstall or it breaks! Some of this stuff may be useful to other people as well - you never know!
